CHARACTER NAME: Marceline Abadeer, The Vampire Queen
SERIES: Adventure Time with Finn and Jake
CANON POINT: Pre-Season 5
LOSS: Marceline will be losing most of her powers, specifically pyrokinesis, necromancy, invisibility, telekinesis, self-healing, and shape-shifting. (Or, most shape-shifting. She can still do this.) As with Mavis losing her bat form, this takes away part of Marceline’s identity as a vampire, and also will leave her at a general disadvantage where she cannot do the things she is so accustomed to doing. It will change the way she has to go about life, and also make her less of a threat, which she seems to take comfort in.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER:
Marceline Abadeer, who uses the title of Vampire Queen, (though we don’t really see what, exactly, that entails), is a thousand-year-old vampire in the land of Ooo. Since Marceline is not always the most open character, some of her history remains a mystery, but we do know her father is a demon and that, judging by the two bite marks on her neck and her apparent age, she was turned into a vampire as a young adult. As for Ooo itself, well, it's a land where anything and everything can and will happen.
Marceline’s childhood was an odd one. She was often alone, her only friend being a stuffed animal that Simon, the future Ice King, gave her before going mad. Another highlight would seem to be her seemingly gone mother. She says she enjoys the sun and the pain it can give her, because it reminds of her mother taking care of her injuries as a child. Her relationship with her dad, however, is very rocky. When she sings about him stealing her fries and how it hurt her, her song reveals a deeper hurt; she doubts her father even loves her. He pressures her into following the family business of reigning over the Nightosphere, as well, and goes so far as to trick her into doing so. Then there was her boyfriend, Ash, who turned out to be a selfish jerk who sold aforementioned stuffed animal, and possibly turned her into a vampire in the first place, as Marceline claims that he ruined her life. Also, Marceline’s journal reveals that, for a long time, she had no friends.
When Marceline is introduced on the show, she invades Finn and Jake’s home, as it was once hers before she went traveling about Ooo. Her stories of her adventures show that she is a fun-loving girl, while the fact that she kicks Finn and Jake out and leaves them in the rain shows that she can be callous… Or, as Marceline herself puts it, “I’m not mean, I’m a thousand years old, and I just lost track of my moral code.”. It’s really an act of pure nastiness when she threatens Jake, yet when Finn and Jake finally stand up to her, she’s outraged. She lets it go when Finn shows her a fight, as she says it was fun. Marceline is fickle in nature like this, and generally quite strange in what she likes and doesn’t like.
Her next appearance shows her pulling a highly complex and rather cruel prank on Finn, making him her henchman and forcing him to think he’s doing evil things while he’s actually doing harmless or even good things. This shows how far Marceline will go to show herself a good time, not really taking the feelings of others into account. She genuinely mocks Finn’s morals, showing Marceline herself as one without strong morals. She does truly get a kick out of messing with people and pulling pranks. This is seen once again when she pretends to turn Finn and Jake into vampires. However, she can also be charitable, as she is happy to perform for the Duke of Nuts’ son’s birthday party.
Marceline’s apathy is supported by the fact that when her father leaves the Nightosphere to suck up all the souls in Ooo, her main concern is getting her axe bass back. It’s more than just that, though. She has difficulty dealing with her dad, or anything emotional, if it’s not dealt with in song. On the other hand, more of her friendliness and her giving ways are seen when she helps Finn try to impress Princess Bubblegum, and then compliments him. In a different episode, she gets annoyed with one of her ghost buddies when they call her friends morons, and eventually calls her ghost buddies out on being jerks when they put Finn and Jake in danger.
The episode What Was Missing shows us once again that Marceline has trouble expressing her emotions, sometimes even when doing so through song. She tries to explain her feelings about Princess Bubblegum, and ends up embarrassed and infuriated. This episode reveals that a relationship of unspecified but quite possibly romantic nature once existed between the two women. However, it didn’t end well, as Marceline apparently felt PB expected her to be perfect, and to treat PB as if she were perfect, as well. However, in the end of the episode, Marceline discovers that PB kept a gift from Marceline: A shirt she wears as pajamas. This seems to touch Marecline. The episode also shows how much Marceline has grown to care for her friends, as it is revealed that she went out on an adventure with them without any self-gain in mind. However, when they point this out, she gets mad and transforms into a large beast, chasing them. She does mellow a bit over time, though. When Finn and Jake go into her house against her orders, and overhear some very private thoughts, she is quick to forgive them when they apologize.
Overall, though Marceline has rough edges and trouble expressing her emotions, she has grown over the course of the show into a strong and loyal friend to the heroes.
